Permutaciones infinitas de unos y ceros, bien disimuladas bajo los atractivos colores de las pantallas de nuestros dispositivos, controlan nuestras rutinas, nuestros trabajos y hasta nuestro ocio. El mundo del arte ha optado por abrazar estos dígitos y ponerlos a su servicio, generando así una nueva forma de creación, donde los números, de manera invisible, imponen su orden. Es el arte de la era digital. Hablamos en Londres con 3 de sus exponentes: Disco-Disco, Eva Papamargariti y Antonio Roberts.
Digitalism & Digitalists
We are slaves to binary code. Infinite permutations of ones and zeros, well-concealed under the attractive colours of the screens of our digital devices, they control our routines, our work and even our leisure. The world of art has opted to embrace these digits and put them to its own use, generating a new form of creation where numbers invisibly impose their order. It’s the art of the digital era. We have a chat to three of its champions in London: Disco-Disco, Eva Papamargariti and Antonio Roberts.

DISCO-DISCO
Un componente de misterio impregna la obra de Disco-Disco. De rostro y nombre desconocidos, apenas se puede hallar información sobre este artista en la red. Su obra se muestra onírica, monolítica y experimental. Imágenes que mezclan lo real con lo imaginario, donde el blanco, el negro y la luz lo dominan todo.
Disco-Disco: “Creo que el proceso de hacer imágenes no es algo lineal con un comienzo y un final, sino que es un bucle constante de ensayo, práctica y error, así que usar un verbo en latín que significa aprender/practicar me pareció una buena idea. Además, me gusta firmar con un nombre que borre las pistas sobre la identidad de quién las hace, crear preguntas sobre su origen. Es interesante que no se pueda asociar el nombre con una persona o con una nacionalidad, hace que las imágenes tengan un aura de misterio”.
Concepto: “Quiero hacer imágenes que transporten a otra parte usando elementos lo más simples posibles. Transformar algo cotidiano en una imagen irreal a través de un proceso de reconstrucción; algo muy parecido a lo que hacían los surrealistas, pero usando técnicas digitales”.

Disco-Disco: “I think that the process of creating images isn’t something that’s lineal, with a beginning and an end, but rather that it’s a constant loop of rehearsal, practise and error, so using a verb in Latin that means learn/practise seems like a good idea to me. Also, I like signing off with a name that hides the clues to the identity of the person who makes it, stirring questions as to its origins. It’s interesting that you can’t associate a name with a person or nationality, it means that the images have an air of mystery to them”.
Concept: “I want to make images that transport you to another place, using the simplest elements possible. Transforming something day-to-day into an unreal image using a process of reconstruction; something really similar to what the Surrealists did, but using digital technology instead”.

EVA PAPAMARGARITI
Estructuras imposibles y texturas irreales. Así son los espacios que crea Eva Papamargariti, una artista y arquitecta griega en cuyo particular universo colorista, surreal y de tintes retrofuturistas se han fijado músicos como Django Django o el productor PBDY para poner imagen a sus videoclips.
Arquitectura: “El hecho de haber estudiado arquitectura ha afectado significativamente a mi forma de pensar y crear. Esta influencia está presente en mi trabajo, tanto a nivel teórico como a nivel práctico. A veces resulta muy obvio, y otras es más sutil, pero siempre hay una parte de mi cerebro que piensa como un arquitecto, incluso cuando estoy haciendo modelos y animaciones con el ordenador”.
Concepto: “No se trata de perseguir un mundo utópico o un escenario de difícil existencia, sino que tiene que ver con las situaciones sorprendentes, en ocasiones paradójicas, que nos rodean en la vida real. Lo que hago es transformarlas en arte a través de mi visión distorsionada”.

EVA PAPAMARGARITI
Impossible structures and unreal textures. That’s what the spaces that Eva Papamargariti creates are like, a Greek artist/architect based in London whose particular universe is colourful, surreal and with retrofuturistic touches. It has even caught the attention of musicians such as Django Django or producer PBDY, who have used her art in their videos.
Architecture: “The fact that I studied architecture has significantly affected my way of thinking and creating. This influence is present in my work, as much on a theoretical level as on a practical one. Sometimes it seems really obvious and other times more subtle, but there’s always part of my brain that’s thinking like an architect, even when I’m making models and animations with the computer”.
Concept: “It’s not about pursuing a Utopian world or a scene of difficult existence, but rather it’s to do with surprising situations, often paradoxical, that surround us in real life. What I do is transform them into art through my twisted vision”.

ANTONIO ROBERTS
Este joven británico ha hecho de los errores su forma de expresión. Forzando al máximo los límites de la informática, Antonio Roberts explora los fallos y los convierte en arte, distorsionando la realidad y generando hipnóticos loops que buscan comprender el funcionamiento del mundo digital.
Glitch Art: “Mi trabajo consiste en crear arte a partir de errores informáticos. Estos se pueden generar de manera intencionada, creando circunstancias que faciliten su aparición, o de manera natural”.
Concepto: “Es una manera de explorar cómo funcionan las cosas. Podría hacerlo leyendo el manual, pero me gusta más el enfoque de romperlas y ver qué ocurre. De este modo puedo descubrir y mostrar cómo funcionan, e incluso puedo encontrar maneras de ampliar su funcionalidad”.

This young Brit has made mistakes his form of expression. Forcing IT to its limits, Antonio Roberts explores errors and turns them into art, distorting reality and generating hypnotic loops that try to understand the way the digital world functions.
Glitch Art: “My work consists of creating art using computer errors. These can be generated in an intentional way, creating circumstances that facilitate their apparition, or in a natural way”.
Concept: “It’s a way of exploring how things work. I could do it by reading the manual, but I prefer the method of breaking them and seeing what happens. In that way I can discover and show how they work, and I can even find ways of broadening their functionality”.
