The floor of the hotel floor moves under the feet of the traveller, but we like to think that it’s the individual who dictates the direction. It’s a bit more romantic. An idea from the world of low-cost that is sometimes demonised. Just like with boutique hotels, or theatre hotels, it’s now happening with hostels or urban tourist lodgings, however you call them. The fashion that is 2.0 bunk-beds isn’t just a flash in the pan; it’s something that’s having a huge effect all across the globe.

Until very recently, hoiking your backpack over your shoulders and globetrotting inch by inch meant making do with minimum funds, nasty digs or, if you were of the right age, with improvised youth hostels in university halls, old hospitals or noble buildings, none of which had any investment put into them whatsoever. It had to be the globetrotters themselves who re-invented the model and expanded the menu of experiential establishments for backpackers. Innovation always comes to the rescue, and the new hoteliers took on the challenge of heading businesses that bring the concept of lodgings or youth hostels to the world of boutique hotels. The fine line is only made clear when taking a look at the prices. On top of that, the context of an economic crisis comes hand in hand with a crisis of the sector, understood as a re-thinking that accommodates the new, intelligent traveller, be they a flash packer, hipster, millennial or vulgaris lodger. In turn, a niche market for designers, architects and multi-disciplinary artists has arisen. A fertile ecosystem indeed.

Bunk-beds remain, because you have to be flexible and because the hostel is still a social place. The general HQ is shared over the trip although a few decant themselves into private rooms. As well as piled up beds in the dormitories, the lobby, the kitchen and the bathrooms are still shared spaces. But those are shiny new bathrooms and showers. Really! Well-located in city centres, the 2.0 hostels have the most chic interiors, social vestibules where you can hang out, fashionable bars, beds that aren’t straw mattresses, luxurious amenities and up-to-date technology. All at a reasonably price. Friendliness comes first, as well as useful information on the cities and an expert level of social network management, but all with a style that surpasses expectations.
