Neo Generation: Albec Bunsen

In 2012, and at only 20 years of age, Albert García created his own brand with his concept of avant-garde streetwear. Today, 4 years later, he successfully moves his collections all over national and international fairs and debuts in Madrid Fashion Week next September

Albec Bunsen: “The name came from an joke. I was 16 years old, and I was just as absent-minded as I am now, and one of technical drawing teachers asked one of classmates behind me ‘Ho veus?’ (You see?), and she answered ‘Sí, el vec, el vec’, to which I jumped, thinking that they said my name… and that’s when the jokes starting until they turned into Albec Bunsen, referring to ‘bec Bunsen’ (The Bunsen burner in Catalan). So yeah, it has to do with the chemistry of the 19th century, Robert Bunsen.”

Evolution: “Now I don’t destroy as many meters as when I started (laughter). Making clothing is much more complicated, I focus more on the initial concept and try to develop it with what I learned at the LCI Barcelona. What was before 6 garments with 50 different prints, are now 50 garments with 6 different prints. Now I have more knowledge when it comes to using something for one purpose, whether it be machinery, tissues, complements… As far as repercussion goes, I’m still high on the positive response. 4 years ago, I couldn’t have imagined a runway in Montreal or having a stand at Who’s Next Paris.”

Genre: “I really think my collections follow a male inspiration, focused on him, but I don’t rule out having my clothes worn by women. And when it happens, it’s wild. Anyway, I usually forget about the word ‘man’ and what it entails in fashion, because I love to use skirts and dresses.”

Fabrics: “For the Winter 2016 collection I use fabrics that are a bit technical: gummy, thermo pressed, waterproof with a plastic-like aspect. You can go skiing without being even a little bit cold with no problem. Tricot is a collaboration with Aitana Baeza, a good friend and amazing with needles. What I don’t use are skins in my collections, so although they may seem like leather, they aren’t.”

Prints: “Yes, prints on the most athletic garments mean hours of drawing by hand and digitalizing. If there’s anything that I like more than sewing, it’s drawing like a madman.”

Audience: “I imagine Bunsen people as fun and bold, sassy, with strong characters. People who want to be noticed without losing comfort (bless the sweat suit).”

Prices: “Around 150 euros, but there is a bit of everything. There is no such thing as a high or low price. Just a lot of work behind it.”

Soundtrack : “The show starts out with Destination: Mother Moon. by Kid Cudi, and eventually finishes off with Universo de Las Bistecs.”
